California Teacher Features UC-AFT Member Organizers
CFT’s bi-monthly magazine, California Teacher, ran a story in the November/December issue featuring union members from Berkeley, Davis and Santa Cruz who are leading our member outreach and organizing programs on their campuses. These Site Rep Coordinators share their experiences talking with colleagues about how we can strengthen our union and about the important role of UC-AFT site reps in our organizing program. “What resonates are the basic questions of job security — getting continuing appointments — and raises,” says Katie Rodger at UCD. “It’s really about people talking to each other.”

Candidates for Lt. Governor to Address UC-AFT Council Meeting in Berkeley Jan 13
Our first Council meeting of 2018 will host two candidates for California Lt. Governor. Eleni Kounalakis and Ed Hernandez, who are vying for endorsements in the race, will each have an opportunity to address the Council and respond to our members’ questions and concerns. The Lt. Governor sits on the UC Board of Regents and is currently the only elected and publicly accountable official on the Board.

Know Your Rights: Paid Leave for Jury Duty with Substitute
Article 12 section F, Leaves of Absence and Active Service Modified Duty, says that NSF shall be eligible for paid leave for required jury duty when verification of service has been provided. Article 8 section B, Instructional Support, provides that when an NSF requests a substitute and the University deems a substitute necessary, the University will assume all expenses related to the substitute. These articles may be useful in cases when deferring jury duty service to the end of the term is not possible or acceptable. Please read the full contract language and get in touch with a union rep on your campus if you have questions.

In Case You Missed It: Oct 31 Op-ed by Karl Lisovsky
Karl Lisovsky, President of Local 1990 at UCLA, penned this op-ed on UC’s growing reliance on part-time and contingent faculty for the Daily Bruin. It’s worth a look back for the overview Karl provides of the issues related to contingency and part-time status for both students and faculty. A nice bonus is the Related Content column on the right margin, which curates Daily Bruin stories on UC-AFT’s successes in 2017!
