Proposed Amendments to the UC-AFT Constitution

UC-AFT held a Constitutional Convention with member representation from every Local over three Saturdays in December 2020 and January 2021.The Convention closed on January 9, 2021 and resulted in a proposed amended Constitution, which was subsequently adopted by the Council on January 16, 2021. The amended Constitution will take effect when approved by two-thirds of UC-AFT Locals per voting processes outlined in Local Constitutions and Bylaws.  Per the systemwide UC-AFT Constitution, Local votes to amend the Constitution must be conducted prior to the next Council meeting on April 17, 2021.

Summary of Proposed Amendments

  • Change from a Council of Locals to a single, systemwide Local with Chapters on every campus.
  • Detail rights of Chapters within the systemwide Local.
  • Change systemwide Executive Board elections from Council delegate election to a statewide one person, one vote of the membership.
  • Change terms of Executive Board office from one year to two years.
  • Add Unit 17 Vice President office to systemwide Executive Board, to be voted on only by members of Unit 17. Defines responsibilities.
  • Add Unit 18 Vice President office to systemwide Executive Board,  to be voted on only by members of Unit 18. Defines responsibilities.
  • Add elected Council Representatives with two year terms, to be voted on only by members of the Chapter. Each Chapter will have ex-officio Council Reps for Local Presidents/Chairs (two max, one from each unit) and one Council Rep for every 200 members.
  • Allow for virtual participation in Council meetings.
