Legislative Work

Many of the issues UC-AFT works on are directly influenced by the political atmosphere in Sacramento.  The University of California has traditionally paid for its instructional mission with funding from the State, so according to UC our positions as lecturers and librarians are almost entirely funded by State dollars.

UC-AFT is also committed to maintaining and improving the quality of the educational experience for students at UC, so our interest in California state politics and budgetary deliberations extends beyond their influence on our salaries and job security.

UC-AFT has a Vice President of Legislation on our systemwide executive board.  This position is currently held by Axel Borg, who is a librarian at UC Davis.  Our legislative efforts include writing bills, lobbying for and against them, and tracking the progress of legislation.  We also endorse candidates in races that we feel the outcome will have a particular influence on UC issues.
